ARLINGTON — Texas Rangers right-handed pitcher Luke Jackson exited Monday’s 2-1 win vs. the Colorado Rockies at Globe Life Field after his throwing hand was hit by a comebacker in the top of the ninth inning.
Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon hit a first-pitch curveball 111.2 mph up the middle and off Jackson’s hand. The 33-year-old closer attempted to field the ball, which ricocheted off of him and toward second baseman Marcus Semien, then immediately exited the game with Rangers’ athletic trainer Matt Lucero.
Jackson’s X-rays were negative, according to Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, though he could still potentially need a stint on the injured list. Jackson’s hand was swollen and bruised on the top in the clubhouse postgame.
“It swelled up pretty good,” Bochy said. “Tomorrow, we’ll see how it responds. That thing blew up right away. We do have some concern, could be an IL, we don’t know, we’ll know more tomorrow.”

Jackson has a 5.54 ERA with eight saves this season. Rangers right-hander Jacob Webb entered the game for the injured reliever and closed out the win.
The Rangers lost right-handed pitcher Jon Gray to a fractured wrist during spring training on a similar play. Gray, who has not yet thrown this season, was diagnosed with a broken bone almost immediately though.
“It just sucks honestly,” Rangers starter Tyler Mahle said. “Of any place it could’ve been, throwing hand, it’s brutal. Part of it is what we do, we’re out there pitching. Sixty feet away, it’s not that far, especially when those guys can hit it as hard as they can.”
