Brian Schottenheimer: Cowboys aren’t ‘hiding’ from burden of Super Bowl drought

Schottenheimer showed Tuesday he isn’t afraid to talk about the elephant in the room.

FRISCO — Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer isn’t afraid to talk about the franchise’s Super Bowl drought.

The last time the Cowboys won a Super Bowl was the 1995 season, that’s 30 seasons without a title.

“I don’t get caught up in the drought,” Schottenheimer said before Tuesday’s OTA practice session at The Star. “This is one year. This is the first year of mine. I mean, I’ve been here a couple of years, but when the season is over, we move on. We do. We move on. So, 2024 is over, now it’s 2025. Are we going to win the Super Bowl this year? I hope. I think we are. If we don’t, you move on.”

The Super Bowl drought was mentioned to Schottenheimer after he hosted 25 former Cowboys’ players, many with Super Bowl rings, last week. Several of those players, including Hall of Fame wide receiver Drew Pearson wore their Super Bowl rings.

The Cowboys’ standard is to win a title and Schottenheimer said he doesn’t believe its a burden.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “Not when the head coach sits up here and talks about the ultimate goal is to win a world’s championship. I think it’s to be celebrated. You’ve got an incredible organization, incredible team, but the history speaks to what we’re about. So I think some people might view it as being burdensome. I don’t. I think it’s awesome. I think the more those guys are around, the more we see their Super Bowl rings, which they wear very proudly, I think that’s great for our guys because that’s why we do it. We don’t hide from that.”
