Schottenheimer, the team’s offensive coordinator the last two seasons, agreed to a contract to become the Cowboys head coach. In what can only be called an unexpected turn, the long-time coordinator is now a first-time head coach, becoming the 10th man to hold that title in the franchise’s rich history.

Familiar face returns as DC

A day after introducing Schottenheimer, the organization announced that Matt Eberflus is joining his staff to lead the defense. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Eberflus was previously with the Cowboys from 2011-17, the first five of those years as the linebackers coach. He added passing game coordinator to his title in his final two seasons with the club.

The long-time assistant was named the head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2022, after four seasons as the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator. He was fired last season shortly after the team’s 23-20 loss to Detroit on Thanksgiving Day.
