Letters to the Editor — Three Cheers for Gregg Popovich, Evan Grant, citizens academies

Readers praise NBA retired head coach Gregg Popovich; appreciate a recent Evan Grant column; and recommend city citizens academies.

1 Gregg Popovich — Gregg Popovich‘s sustained success as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs is incomparable. In addition to his many accolades, including five NBA Championships, the most wins in league history and an Olympic gold medal, Coach Pop has developed generations of players and coaches and been a driving force behind the global force of basketball.

There are few people in the basketball community as beloved and revered as Coach Pop. I thank him for his extraordinary leadership and commitment to basketball and wish him well as he embarks on his new role with the Spurs organization.

2 Sportswriter Evan Grant — Re: “A blip or reality? Rangers’ bats awaken after Young orders mandatory BP,” by Evan Grant, April 30 SportsDay column.

Grant’s English professors — heck, even ole Noah Webster himself — would be proud of his opening sentence in this Rangers Insider column using an uncommon adjective. “The Rangers have tried all the basic fixes for their somnambulant offense.”

A few lawyers and veteran schoolteachers probably joined me in Googling “somnambulant” and marveling at the artistry of Grant’s metaphor. To wit: “resembling or characteristic of sleepwalking.” Brilliant.

Thanks for making us think, Evan!

3 Three Plano citizen academies — Three cheers for the three city of Plano citizens academies. I am completing the third academy, City of Plano Governance.

I have graduated from the two other academies — Police and Fire and Emergency Medical Services.

In this latest academy on governance, we met for an hour with the city manager and Mayor John B. Muns — the leadership behind Plano’s excellence.

We had a visit to the animal shelter and met Kelly, an elderly male German shepherd with mournful eyes looking for a forever home.

Also on the schedule were meetings with the Public Works, Engineering and traffic control.

These professionals can give you the details and more. If you want to get involved and understand Plano, the three citizens academies are for you.

Jim Sherrard, Plano
