Michael Johnson, who won two TAPPS state titles at Bishop Dunne, has been named the head football coach at Samuell, he said Thursday.
It will be Johnson’s first head coaching job since he spent 11 years in that role at Bishop Dunne from 2009 to 2019 and led his team to four appearances in the state championship game. He was 73-58 at Bishop Dunne and won TAPPS Division I state championships in 2014 and 2018.
“I just believe in the community, I believe in the vision that [Principal Gabriel] Guerra has set for this program,” Johnson said of the Samuell job. “Then just my overall experience in getting the opportunity to lead young men and young women again is something that I was really passionate about. When meeting with everyone and seeing the campus and seeing our students, it got me excited to lead this program.”
Johnson was at Duncanville this past season and coached inside linebackers for a 13-1 team that reached the Class 6A Division I state semifinals. He was also the powerlifting coach.
After leaving Bishop Dunne, Johnson was the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Groesbeck and then the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Ferris. He worked at Frisco Memorial for two years and was the defensive coordinator and leadership coordinator before going to Duncanville this past season.
Johnson played football at Bishop Dunne and Louisiana Tech.
